Statement on Ukraine/Russia
The astroparticle physics community in the Netherlands is pursuing its scientific goals embedded in the international science community, fostering worldwide peaceful connections. With deep shock we witness the Russian military aggression against Ukraine. Our sympathy is with all who suffer directly and indirectly, foremost with the Ukrainian people enduring immense personal and material losses. We applaud and support efforts for peace all around the world, including those by brave Russian citizens. The Dutch knowledge institutions have suspended all formal and institutional partnerships with educational and knowledge institutions in the Russian Federation and Belarus. Support for Ukrainian and Russian students and staff in the Netherlands is granted. Also, the connections to our colleagues in Russia are not strictly cut: 'Many of them have put their lives in jeopardy by publicly criticising the invasion. Consequently, the institutions are keen to give their staff full freedom to continue their existing personal correspondence with these researchers where appropriate. Particularly in times of war and conflict, it is important for us to keep communicating with these researchers.' At the interface of astrophysics, astronomy, cosmology, and elementary particle physics a new field of research is under rapid development: astroparticle physics. In this interdisciplinary research field several fundamental issues regarding the origin of matter in the Universe are being explored. The subjects being addressed include: cosmic rays, gamma rays, high-energy neutrinos, gravitational waves, and dark matter. On this web site information on the Dutch activities in astroparticle physics can be found.
Actual projects in the field of Astroparticle Physics with Dutch involvement can be found in projects.
